Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
